I was pretty much sure that I had no idea what was doing at this point and had no idea what to expect. I had no idea the price point or quality of an open source project could be so low. I had no idea what would learn about development and with open source. I had absolutely no idea what open source really was and how I could best use it in my career.
I knew nothing.
I spent all that time on my phone with friends getting to know people and learning about development the tools I would need. My job search was slow so I wasn't able to find a developer work with. I felt like had no choice at this point but to go a community college and learn from the community to get a good position in development.
I also learned how to do the things I needed to do get a job in the industry. I did some client work, attended workshops, learned about how to use and debug a server. I also got better at making things and coding faster.
So what does this have to do with open source?
For someone who is still on the fence about open source, learning source is not only about learning how it all works and getting comfortable with a particular tool, it's also about knowing how you can contribute.
In my previous life I was a software engineer. wrote the code, made all decisions as to what goes into the code and how it would be run. I also wrote a lot of documentation and got my hands dirty a lot with other people's code as well.
I was always the face of those things and everyone who worked with me was always the same way. I would be the one to say something nice about an open source project, the one to say "hey that is a great idea" or "that is a terrible idea" or "hey this is a great idea and it'll solve a real world problem."
This was a big part of the process.
This was also something I learned from.

I have a couple projects now which I've been using for a while and I see what they do and how work. I feel like I've gained some valuable skills about software development and how to use code. I also have some interesting projects that I can't reveal right now because they still need to be tested for bugs and make sure they work with the tools we're using.
The more I learned about how open source works and who is open source, the more excited I got for learning. don't think we ever get enough time, and open source has given me the chance to learn so much in a short time.
